Nearly 60% of Blood Cancer Patients Covered by Medicare Delay or Forgo Treatment

Survival of older patients with blood cancers continues to improve as more effective, less toxic therapies are introduced. However, these lifesaving treatments often are expensive and many cancer patients face financial burdens caused by ever-increasing healthcare costs. In fact, according to a new study released October 21st by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), 59 percent of surviving blood cancer patients enrolled in traditional Medicare do not begin active treatment within three months of their diagnosis.

HHS and FDA Release Drug Importation Plan to Lower Prices
HHS and the Food and Drug Administration released a plan on Wednesday to lay the foundation for safe importation of certain drugs intended for foreign markets. HHS Secretary Alex Azar said that the plan represents a shift in agency thinking regarding importation from foreign countries. HHS has long been resistant to importation due to concerns about drug safety, however President Trump has been pushing for importation.

Illinois Governor Signs Step Therapy and Fertility Preservation Bills into Law

On Monday, August 27, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed two ASCO supported bills into law. The first, Illinois House Bill 4821, provides that patients under treatment of Stage 4 advanced, metastatic cancer will be excluded from any step therapy or fail first application. ASCO sent a letter of support in Illinois and has also supported these “Jimmy Carter” step therapy bills in Colorado and Pennsylvania.

The second piece of legislation signed, Illinois HB 2617, will require health insurance companies in the state to cover the preservation of eggs, sperm, and embryos for patients with cancer. This makes Illinois the fourth state, following Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maryland to pass this type of fertility preservation law.
